SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH POLPERRO to MILLENDREATH Thursday 5th May 2011 ...............Walk No. 863 |
|||||
South West Coastal Path No. 41 Total: 390 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4:25 hours unknown 7.5 miles 80% Good Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: 16oC 100% 75% Good Excellent Underfoot Nature: Bluebells, gorse brushes Points of Interest: Polperro Talland Bay Portnadler Bay Hannafore Welson Millendreath General: Parked at Millendreath, in a rough uncontrolled car park, and cycled to Polperro, via Looe, in the rain. Locked bike to railings at entrance to car park. Walked down main sreet of Crumblehorn to Polperro Harbour. Sheltered from the rain and admired the impressive harbour surrounded by white cottages. Clinging to the steep hillside. Past the harbour walls and the sewerage works building site to Brent Cliffs add a path steadily rising to a war memorial on Downend Point. Steep drops from the path, so a walking stick is recommended. Lots of delightful flora on the path, especially around Talland Bay. Gorse bushes very impressive with their bright yellow flowers contrasting the murky weather. Onwards, turning the corner at the point from Talland Bay to Portnadler Bay, with the island of Looe prominent on the skyline. Hannafore soon reached with its wide coast road and long promenade. To Hannafore Point good view of the small sandy beach on the aast side of the Looe river. Down the steps from the pathless road to the extension of the harbour wall passing, Welson the sculptured grey seal. Sat on a bench near Nelson, watching gull feasting on a fish probably discarded by a fishing boat. A level walk along the harbour edge in stark contrast to the up and down of the cliff path. Crossed the Looe bridge from West Looe to East Looe and the shops by the West Looe ferry terminal. (not in use as I passed due to the low tide marking water transport impossible. Left turn at Ye Olde Salutation Inne' to narrow streets climbing steeply to East Loo cliffs. Special care required on this section to Millenoreath. Path Wriggles through the plaidy lanes, streets & alleyways to steps descending steeply to Millendreath beach and car parked at the end of the walk. Excellently varied walked spoilt for me by rainy day.
