DEREK'S FIRST MEMORIES
![]() |
I was born in Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England at Warneford Hospital soon after the end of the Secong World War to my parents Harry & Lily Harwood. After the first few days in Warneford Hospital I was taken to the family home in Fair View Place, Kenilworth Street. I lived in the house until I was nine years old, so I can describe the surrounding easily and I believe accurately. First Home The house was a two up, two down typical terraced house situated in a yard off the street, with a window to each of the four rooms facing the yard, but no windows to the rear. To me life only existed to the front of the house, nothing was ever discussed about the rear of the house. To me this could have been the end of the world.

in 1949 I first went to Radford Semele CofE Infant school, then at the age of 6 I went to St Paul's CofE Infant and Junior School. Mr Rudderford was the Head Teacher. It was a Typical Victorian School. There were rows with 4-5 children who were shoulder to shoulder.
At the age of 9 I got glasses. In 1961 I went to the Campion High School for Boys where I enjoyed Maths and Art. Our year was the first who sat the O Levels exams, where I passed Maths, technical Drawing, Geography and Woodwork.

DEREK'S HOBBY - WALKS
![]() |
"I didn’t start serious walking until my mother gave me a Christmas present in 1976, titled "No Through Road, The AA Book of Country Walks". This was when I was 30+ years old. The only previous walks I had achieved before this were Crib Goch, North Wales (Walk 1) and 22 fell tops in the Lake District whilst on holidays. As I was travelling around the country with work I decided to try a few of the AA walks. I enjoyed them so much, and luckily I had kept a record of those walks, so I eventually decided to try and complete all 205 of them. This was not easy as the walks spanned all the corners of Britain. My enthusiasm for walking grew so much that I joined the Spa Hillwalkers and eventually Midland Hillwalkers on their monthly walks to the hills. This was just the beginning, I soon challenged myself to complete a long distance path and chose the 'Pennine Way', which further encouraged me to walk other Ways & Paths and more themed walks. The rest is history. See my lifetime of walks page.
