SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH FOWEY to POLPERRO Friday 15th October 2010 ...............Walk No. 840 |
|||||
South West Coastal Path No. 40 Total: 382.50 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4:25 hours 6 miles 8 miles 85% Dull & Misty Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: 11oC 100% 0% Misty Excellent Underfoot Nature: Pheasant & Seals Points of Interest: Fowey Black Bottle Rocks Wellake Pencarrow Lansallos Rapheal Cliff Caerhays Castle Crumplethorn Polperro General: Parked car in main Polperro car park in Crumplehorn. Obtained change from the man in the entrance hut for the machine. He treated everyone like a robot. Hard cycle to Polruan via narrow cornish lanes. Signposts good apart from junction to Lansallos village near Tregavithick. Very narrow through Trevarder, pleased not to meet another vehicle. Locked bike in car park on St Saviour's Hill, Polrvin. Walked down the twisting alley ways the quay to bring back memories of walk 142 with Clare 18/08/1989. Returned to narrow streets and walked along west street and up battery lane to cliffs above the entrance to the harbour. Good views of the previous day's walk, including ready money Beach. Met a dad & his baby daughter throwing a Frisbee for the dog to fetch. Continued along the path to find a pheasant at Wellake, a pleasant surprise. Twisty path through bushes to Black Bottle Rocks and the wonderful views across tranquil atlantic bay. Magic walk around the bay, to Pencarrow Head. Cows wondering over the head as the local farmer was cutting the grass with the tractor at precarious angles from time to time. Steep descent at the head to the eastern side of the hard and Lantivet Bay. Good natter to a fellow path walker by watch house cove (David Rowcroft). Surprise view of Lansallos church from west coombe. Path relatively level across Lansallos cliff where I was expecting to find cows on the path, fortunately they were grazing off the track. I wasn't looking forward to a detour off the path on the steep slopes between the bushes. Next surprise was the stone landmark at broad cove. Steep section from Broad Love to far side of Rapheal Cliff with hundreds or steps up and down. Take care passing Blacky Bale point, path next to edge of cliff with good views to distract your attention. Next surprise was a very dense spiders web by chapel cliff. Entrance to Polperro a sudden but welcome surprise, repairs to harbour entrance on opposite cliff, As I admired the view high above the harbour, someone called my name it was a couple I met at the start of my holiday, near Caerhays Castle. Long walk through Polperro, with memories of holiday in August 89. Past cottage up the coombe to Crumplehorn and car park. Walk full of surprises.
