Walked to North Cubbington Wood and turned left towards Stareton Village. Crossed Coventry Road by Furzan Hill Farm pool, passing a strange observation tower whose purpose could only be speculated, soon after the pool, and a clock on the post by the stile just before Leicester Lane. New battery required. Large exotic caged bird spotted outside house by Leicester Lane. Crossed the main road with care (Lillington to Ryton) to an Unclassified County Road, taking us into Stareton Village. If the road is unclassified, does this mean the council need not tarmac the road? We continued through the well kept village of Stareton and the adjacent small wood, to the footbridge over the River Avon. Steady ascent from the river, past a row of diseased Chestnut Trees to Stoneleigh Road, the former A444. Memories of my daily cycle ride to work and Technical College in Coventry as an Apprentice Telecommunications Engineer. One hundred miles cycling per week, just to go to work. Much different today, the students seem to spend most of their time in the pub. Onwards over Motslow Hill, down the 'Sunken Lane', past the row of delightful thatched cottages, to the footbridge over the River Stowe at Stoneleigh Village. A pair of swans slowly glided down the river as we walked to the church and the picturesque village. A perfect setting in the sunshine. From Stoneleigh we walked to Bubbenhall, partly along the Coventry & Centenary Ways near Tantara Lodge and the A446. From Waverley Edge we past the old Bubbenhall School to Ryton Pools. Here we had a break at the picnic tables and enjoyed our refreshments. From the pools we continued along Nunwood Lane to Wappenbury Wood where a Green Woodpecker skimmed above our heads. Leaving the wood we passed numerous examples of fine fungi before we carefully kept to the footpath route and crossed through the middle of a newly ploughed field to Wappenbury Village. Here we put our waterproofs on as the threatening dark clouds finally dropped their rain on us. Just after Wappenbury Village en-route to Hunningham Village, we crossed the River Leam via a newly refurbished footbridge. Apparently the local prize bull demolished the old bridge walls when the farmer was trying to lead the bull over the bridge to the adjacent field. We headed straight back to Cubbington via South Cubbington Wood because of the rain, but it stopped and soon brightened up again as we finished the walk. Another excellent ramble with John through the local countryside. Location: www.streetmap.co.uk, - Start & finish from Cubbington 434360/268445, - via Stoneleigh 433115/272690, - via Ryton Pools 437250/272565. (Click on location and use Zoom). Hazards: Care always required when crossing or walking along busy main roads. Always keep your eyes (skinned) on the look out for vehicles. This is always easier if the walkers are on the right handside of the road walking towards the on-coming traffic. Click Here to Return to 'Lifetime of Walks' Homepage | |||||
