Description:
Started and finished at Pinehurst, Cubbington. Walked through the churchyard to the alleyway by childrens playground & Austen Court, to South Cubbington Wood. Turned right at Weston Hall, with sighting of Weston under Wetherley Church on left, along a good farm track to River Leam, passing a couple of horse riders & a sweet tasteful apple tree. River and footbridge very picturesque in autumn sunshine, with the leaves starting to turn colour. We followed the River Leam to the 'Red Lion' public house at Hunningham Village, passing some dog walkers exercising their animals Turned off the Hunningham Lane at the Bus Shelter to Wappenbury Hamlet, crossing the River Leam again at a newly renovated footbridge, into a very well kept village with thatched houses and a tidy churchyard with a fourteenth century cross. From Wappenbury, with its iron age earthworks or ramparts, we continued past the Hall until we met the river again by the Fosse Way Roman Road near Princethorpe. Here the local grazing horses looked to see if we were going to leave the gate open, so they could explore the adjacent fields. Onwards alongside the river to Marton Village with its pair of old & new road bridges carrying the A423 Trunk Road between Coventry & Oxford. Over the old bridge and past a garage selling an old classic Ford Popular car, TPH 507, for £2,495. Not a bad price. Short cut alongside the river again to the churchyard, where the Wardens were cutting the grass and maintaining the area. We considered lunch but decided to continue walking to a log near Hunningham House, rather than in the churchyard, as a previous walk (680). So we walked on through the delightful village, with its thatched houses. Pity about the parked cars in the High Street, wonderful photo opportunity missed. From the village we crossing fields of Kale to a footbridge over the River Itchen, by a pheasant feeder. As we approached the log for our lunch break, we saw the local farmer spraying the huge fields close by and wondered if the clouds of spray had enveloped the log. To be safe we continued a couple of fields and sat either side of a stile near the Fosse Way. After a brief lunch and a good natter, we crossed the Fosse Way (B4455) Roman Road to Hunningham again, passing a herd of curious bullocks. I was nervous, as usual, but John was unperturbed and walked the across the field as normal. As we walked into Hunningham we disturbed a flock of crows feeding from a rabbit carcuss, obviously a victim of a passing car. Through Hunningham, past the Old Bakehouse & Evette's Horses (John's Daughter), and St Margarette's Church to the River Leam yet again. Retraced steps to footbridge, but returned directly to Cubbington via the south fence of South Cubbington Wood. Another excellent day's walking in Warwickshire with John.

Hazards: Take care when crossing fields containing grazing bullocks, especially if you are as chicken as this walker. Years of walking across lush British fields and still pleased to reach the stile on the far side of the field.
