WARWICKSHIRE RAMBLE MARTON Tuesday 3rd October 2006 ..................................Walk No. 680 |

Warwickshire Ramble No 2 Total 19.5 miles Time Taken: 5 hrs Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: Threat of Rain 10:30 am - 3:30 pm 11.5 miles 75% Dull & Spots of Rain Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: Wild Life: Birds 17oC 95% 3% Average Muddy in Places Sheep Total AA: Total MH: Total LD: Total AW: Other: Total Distance: 1027.5 mls 931.5 mls 1823.5 mls 162 mls 960.5 mls 4905 miles Companions: (Derek) John Ingram Points of Interest and LINKS: Cubbington Village Thwaites Factory Offchurch Bury Offchurch Village River Leam Hunningham Village Weston under Wetherley Village South Cubbington WoodDescription: Started from Pinehurst, Cubbington, walked through the village, past the Church and the King's Head Public House (Pub), to Mill Lane & footpath past South Cubbington Wood to footbridge over the River Leam, enroute to Manor Farm at Offchurch. River high after recent heavy rains. Evidence of crops washed away on south slopes of fields between South Cubbington Wood and the river. Most of the walk was spent 'puddle hopping'. Onward through Offchurch Village with a short sharp ascent from 'Stag's Head' pub to the village hall. We visited the upholstery group for a short while before continuing past the churchyard and the reserved burial plots, (how much thought do you give to your own death?), to the cycle and walking track on the route of the dismantled railway. The loop line between Leamington (former Avenue Station) to Rugby Central. As we joined the track and passed under the 'Green Lane' bridge, we could see the two smoke deflectors on the underside of the bridge, clearly showing that the railway loop line had two tracks. This is hard to imagine now that the flora has grown so much over the years. As we walked along the almost straight and flat track, memories flooded back from my youth and steam train spotting days, when I travelled by steam train to Rugby for a day's train spotting. This was especially good because the main Leamington line was on the 'Great Western Region' (GWR), whereas the Rugby lines were 'Midland Region' (LMS) and 'Eastern Region' (LNER). I was therefore guaranteed to 'Cop' or see different steam engines. Very muddy underfoot between the 'Fosse Way' Roman Road and the 'Ridgeway Lane' high metal bridge. Continued past many edible 'Crab' apple trees to bridge and lane into Marton. Walked down the picturesque and tranquil high street past the thatched houses with the 'Corn Cock' on the roof of 'The Old Brew House', to lunch or sandwiches on the bench presented by Marton Womens Institute (thank you), outside the tower of the church and overlooking the meadows of the River Itchen and the River Leam. After lunch we headed to Eathorpe Village, past the converted Eathorpe Park Hotel, now apartments, and more memories of Christmas Lights. Recommend a visit, the whole village is a mass of lights. Onto Hunningham past the high and fast flowing River Leam. Tempted to consume a pint in the 'Red Lion' pub, but curbed our instincts and continued over the old and narrow Hunningham River Bridge to Cubbington Woods, passing the prominent Weston Church in the distance, finishing the walk in Cubbington Village. Another great day walking in the lush Warwickshire countryside. Location: www.streetmap.co.uk , - Start & finish from Cubbington 434360/268445, - via Hunningham 437580/268370, - via Offchurch 435950/265875. (Click on location and use Zoom). Hazards: Take care when walking by a river during flooding times. The river can be fast flowing and very deep and dangerous in unexpected places.
