SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH FALMOUTH to PENDOWER Wednesday 23rd June 2010 ...............Walk No. 815 |
|||||
South West Coastal Path No. 35 Total 337.5 miles Time Taken: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4.5 hours 9.5 miles 90% Sunny & Gentle Breeze Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: 22oC 2% 0% Good Footpath Very Dry Nature:Wild Flowers and Horses Points of Interest: Falmouth St Anthony's Head St Mawes Roseland Church Great Molunan Porthbeor Beach Portscatho Porthbean Beach Pendower General: Parked by Pendower Court in car park above beach and cycled to place near St Anthony Head, via Portscatho Village. Locked bike to metal fence by Place House and realised I had lost my bike lock at Halfords Passage, besides my walking pole at Maenporth beach toilets. Tide out, so ferry to St Mawes via a short path from Place House. Walked to St. Anthony in Roseland Church via a mediaeval stone coffin. Entered church and wrote in the visitors book. Passed the beehives and wheat fields to Carricknath point and the magnificent views to Falmouth, Carrick roads and St. Mawes. Disturbed a thrush eating in a snail near Great Molunan. The thrush didn't fly off but run a head. Wouldn't fly off and risk dropping the snail. Quick glimpse of St Anthony lighthouse then a steep climb to car park by holiday cottages and the disused battery. Welcome water top up at the toilets. Path stayed high to zone point, with lots of wild flowers, skylarks and passing yachts. Steady undulating walk in hot conditions via Porthbeor beach in Towan beach with local car parks busy but not full of cars. Path passes a wreck post near Towan beach, where the pole simulates the mass of a ship for training and rescue purposes. The easy path to Portscatho give good examples of Cornish stiles, a kind of stone cattle grid with horizontal gaps and different heights stones. The beaches are sandy, but a lot of sand was removed from the beaches for the land in the past. When the pretty fishing village of Porthscatho is reached take the North Parade, a pleasant and different route through a village. Just before Porthcurnick beach a sudden track is crossed the via a steep step of steps down and up. Water bottle replenished at beach public toilets. At Porthbean beach the path crosses a beach for a few yards, be aware of this at high tide and stormy weather. The path takes a sharp detour inland to circumnavigate Pendower hotel just before the car park and the end of the walk.
