Botanic Garden Puck's Glen River Eachaig
Description:
Parked in free car park near church at Kilmun. We walked up Broad Forest Road to Puck's Glen gaining considerable height over Holy Loch and Strath Eachaig. Views were restricted due to the maturity of pine woods. We followed a good, new white marked track up Puck's Glen, and came to an abrupt stop at a hide. There was no track visible, only the return walk back to the Forest Road. We headed directly for a faint track by electricity pylons. After a shelter during a short, sharp shower, we discovered the faint track was some old workings and no track could be seen or found. We searched around the pylons, gradually ascending the mountain, observing the direction of the power lines without success. We decided to descend into the wood and look for the track. We had no immediate luck but came across a track where it crossed the forest fence, near the pylons. We descended towards a black gate and found the notice which said that the path up Puck's Glen was closed. We stopped for a break and food on the descent to the botanic gardens beside the River Eachaig. We tried to skirt the gardens but no path was found. Another sharp shower stunted our progress as we entered the gardens before passing Benmore House and The Golden Gates to a minor road from Glen Massan. The Golden Gates were well preserved and impressive. We crossed a footbridge at '10' and turned left upstream to a footbridge and track. Taking the track across the main road we reached the old main road and turned right to Puck's Glen car park. From the car park the good track rose steeply to Puck's Glen Beck and Forest Road at '13'. The bridge over Glen Beck couldn't be found. Retracing the tracks, we returned to the car at Kilmun. There were two steep climbs during this very varied walk with good scenery. .
