'AA' No Through Road, 184th walk & 806 miles. Parked in 'Kettlewell' National Trust Car Park without realising we didn't have to pay as we were all members. Plenty of room for parking the car, very few walking because of the constant rain. Large gap now in the wall opposite the car park, for easy access to the footpath leading to the falls. Easy to find waterfalls besides the Lodore Hotel because of the roar from the huge volume of water crashing down the hillside. We were all amazed at the sight of the uncountable cascades of water from the great height of Ashness Fell. Large zig zag in path as we left the viewing rock desides Watendlath Beck before we gently ascended the gorge to the head of the waterfalls. We were all surprised be the spectacle of the falls as we steadiy climbed upwards. What a great sight only few metres from a busy road which most people drive by without realising. I certainly didn't know what I was missing and I had travelled the road many times in the past. Good paths from waterfalls to Watendlath Road. Take care to read the route directions carefully, good paths in all directions. Big gap in wall at '5', now filled with a fence and stile. Take care on road at '9', use path besides tarmac if possible. As the name implies a surprise view when the road opened out at 'Surprise View'. Unfortunately the view was very misty due to the rain. Derwent Water, High Spy and Catbells could not be missed but Skiddaw was not visible, just a dirty blob unfortunately. After a few photos we continued down the road to Ashness Bridge. Again the classic Lakeland View was destroyed by the rain. The mountain of Skiddaw behind Ashness Bridge could not be seen. However the disappointment is slightly offset by the volume of water crashing down Barrow Beck and under the bridge. We returned to the car park at '10', again empty, and continued down the zig zag path to the road and our Kettlewell car park. We drove to Keswick and enjoyed a welcome pint or three of real ale in a dry pub. I was driving so my pint was stretched considerably. Or, put it another way, I was drip fed.

Start/Finish at Kettlewell Car Park. via Ashness Bridge.

Hazards: Take extra care when walking in rain, most rocks are very slippery when wet. All views, including classic views, are degraded by rain. A good reason to go around again on a sunny day. Do not miss part two, sometime in the future.
