Description:

Drove to Cow Green reservoir and parked in Cow Green car park. Walked to the gated road along the east side of the reservoir. Rounded the dam down to the bridge over the River Tees above Cauldron Snout waterfall. Continued along the good track to Birkdale and beyond, where the track turned north. The Pennine Way track continued along Maize Beck. Stopped for lunch out of the wind in a rocky dip, but soon continued to a footbridge where we discussed which side of the river we would walk. After much debate we chose the south side of the bridge, so we used the footbridge. We soon realised we had made the correct decision, because we were walking a well defined path, whereas the path on the north side could not be seen. As we approached High Cup Plain we passed many horsed with their foals. As we neared High Cup Nick Eddie was walking in front of me and continued along the path which slowly took him to the south side of High Cup Scar. I shouted him but he couldn't hear. The distance between us was slowly increasing, so as the situation became hopeless I texted him. To my surprise the text was sent. I waited and eventually Eddie realised his mistake and retraced his steps back to me on the lip of High Cup Nick. We both took lots of photos then took the stony track to the north of the Nick called 'Narrow Gate'. At first the path did not lose height, but after almost two kilometers the path slowly descended so that Dufton Pike could be easily seen on the right. Past Dodd Hill to Bow Hall and the first tarmac road since Cow Green reservoir. Turned right at Town Head into the village, where my car had been parked the previous night in the village car park. I had completed the whole of the Pennine Way, first started almost 35 years to the day. We took the ceremonial photos then drove back to Cow Green reservoir where Eddie's car was parked. As we drove out of Dufton we saw a walker who we knew wanted a lift to Appleby, so we stopped and took him to Appleby station. He was going back to London by train the next day, so was pleased. Thanks for Eddie for assisting me on this section and the previous section Dufton (9 July 1983) to Kirk Yetholm (24 July 1983). “All's well that ends well.” Thanks Eddie.
