SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH OVERCOMBE to OSMINGTON Wednesday 21st May 2014 ...............Walk No. 1046 |
|||||
South West Coastal Path No. 76 Total: 612.5 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4 hours n/a 3.5 miles 90% Fine and Sunny Wildlife: Wild Flowers Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Conditions: 18oC 2% 0% Hazy Very Good Underfoot Companion: Ann Points of Interest: Overcombe Bowlease Coveway Portland Furzy Cliff Redcliff Point Black Head White Nothe Bran Point Osmington Mills General: Short bus rise from Preston to Overcombe Corner, the start of the walk at the Oasis Café. Good views to the east of the coastal cliffs. Started walking up Bowlease Coveway, with a short detour at the top of Jordan Hill to visit the foundations of the local Roman Temple. Amazing piece of sculpture in garden of house adjacent to the temple, with good views of Portland to right and Riviera Hotel laid out in front. North and soon entering the field towards Redcliffe point. More entricing views ahead along the coast of the higher and steaper cliffs. Lots of examples of past cliff falls after Redcliff Point, with some falls still having the grass on the upper side of the sections. With Blackhead infront and a pebble beach below, to my surprise I passed a children;s activity centre with lots of zip wires of all descriptions. The Path climbed after the centre up Black Head, with previous cliff falls the time in black shale. After Black Head the path meanders up, down and around with duck boards to assist passage over the wet patches. Across a few fields after Black Head to Ormington Mills, with its large detached house and 'Smuggler's Inn' Public House. Instead of turning right at Mill Lane I turned left to Ormington Holiday Park to complete the day's walk. Another enjoyable walk in the warm may sunshine. Roll on the next section.
