South West Coastal Path No. 75 Total: 609 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4.25 hours n/a 5 miles 85% Overcast Nature: Garden Flowers, Sea Birds and Kesteral Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Conditions: 17oC 95% 10% Overcast Spots of Rain Companions: Ann Points of Interest: Ferry Bridge Sandsfoot Castle Wyke Regis Nothe Gardens Newton Bridge Whymouth Sculptures Redcliff Point Overcombe General: We caught to bus no 41 to Ferrybridge. Alighted bus opposite the Ferry Bridge public house. Fingerposts just north of bus shelter pointed east on a path along the shore of 'Small Mouth' to skirt a modern housing estate. The path soon coincides with an old railway along the cutting shows the original site of 'Wyke Regis Halt' railway station. The railway soon topped a steep embankment before the coastal path turns right away from the railway bed to Sandsfoot Gardens. A green attractive oasis around the ruins of Sandsfoot Castle The gardens contain a square fishpond, without any visible fish. From the castle, continue along the old castle road. Unfortunately the path alongside 'Western Ledges' is not available so turn right along 'Belle Vue Road' to small park at the end of 'Bincleaves Groyne' harbour wall. Leave park by using the attractive bridge over Newton's Road to concrete path on top of sea wall. Caution this path has no sea wall and it is busy during good weather. Leave the wall and continue path overlooking Weymouth Harbour. Descent the steps with the brand new handrails to the harbour wall path, by the ferry. Take the rowing boat at a pound a head or skirt the harbour using the harbour lift bridge. As we skirted the harbour we discussed young lads fishing catches in two buckets, three crabs and a tiddler in another. Around the harbour to the esplanade leading to the Kings Monument via sand sculptures of the last supper. Stopped by the Kings Monument for refreshments at a very busy Wetherspoons. After using the internet to download the paper we continued north/east to Overcombe corner via Greenhill Gardens where we watched the gardeners planting the memorial gardens using a ladder to hover over the flower beds. We we passed Lodmoor Nature Reserve I wished I had more time and more energy for a visit. When we reached Overcombe Corner we visited the café on the seafront for a welcome coffee before catching the No4 bus to the car is Preston. A contrasting day through a fishing seaside resort. | |||||
