SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH WONWELL to COCKRIDGE Friday 12th August 2011 ...............Walk No. 884 |
|||||
South West Coastal Path No. 47 Total: 443 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 4.25 hours n/a 7 miles 85% Good Nature: Kestrel Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: 18oC 99% None Dull Excellent Underfoot Compantions: Larry, Ken and Dennis General: Larry drove to estuary and I started walking down slipway alone to beach where estuary is forded from Mothecombe. Returned from beach to steps by broken fingerpost. Through Wrinkle Wood to Malthouse point and Wonwell Beach. Rounded Fernycombe Point and a steady climb to the beacon. Continued over broad grassy fields, ascending and descending steeply many times with magnificent views up and down the coast. Problems with camera from Fernycombe Point onwards. Zoom failure kept turning camera off. Used mobile phone camera but kept trying camera. Extensive views of Burch Island around every corner, showing distance to finish of walk. Excellent hill walking with not a sole in sight, not even a dog walker on any of the small beaches, only a few cows in the valley but strangley enough no sheep. The magnificent scenery makes this section of the coastal path a walkers delight. First signs of civilisation was while approaching Challaborough Bay with its holiday parks. Short distance to Bigbury on Sea and Marine Drive by Warren Point where I met the boys walking towards me. Expected but still a surprise. Walked together down to the beach where we all have a picnic lunch sat on the rocks. Continued with Larry on path alongside the B3392 past SharplandPoint and up Folly Hill to Mount Folly where the path turns to descend the fields to Cockleridge. Please to find fingerpost on sands at Cockeridge, difficult to see direction to ferry. Tide out so Larry took a photo of me on beach where the ferry would normally alight its passengers. Returns to car. What a brilliant walk, another fantastic section, most enjoyable.
