Easy walking after a dry spell of weather, with only a few muddy spots in South Cubbington Wood. Just after Weston Hall we noticed unusual cobwebs in the grass. They were only noticeable because of the very misty conditions causing small droplets of dew on all the segments and sectors of the web. No spiders to be seen. Their hiding place truely uncovered by the weather. As we approached Weston under Wetheley we entered a field with two horses wearing eye protection again the flies. At first it looked as if the horses had been blind folded, but close inspection revealed that the material was very loosely woven, enabling the horse to see clearly. From Weston we walked in the fields adjacent to Waverley Wood until we reached Weston Lane near Bubbenhall Sand Pits. A Heron flew past as we approach the lane. We skirted the sand and refuge pits then headed for Wappenbury Wood. We entered the wood and walked towards Duke's Wood. At the double kissing gate we turned right to Hill Farm and the Princethorpe Road. As we closed the gate from the field to the road, a Swift flew close and swerved its way into the field. Due to a shortage of time we walked along the road into Wappenbury. This is not recommended because the road is narrow and is frequently used by heavy goods vehicles enroute to the sand pits. We walked through Wappenbury Village and its Hillfort to the bridge over the River Leam towards Hunningham Village. At the village the narrow bridge was closed to vehicles for repairs to the stonework. We wondered if the Red Lion Public House would lose customers because of the closure. From the bridge we walked directly back to Cubbington and retraced our steps through South Wood. Another good morning's ramble with John through the Warwickshire countryside. Location: www.streetmap.co.uk, - Start & finish from Cubbington 434360/268445 , - via Wappenbury Wood 437630/270800, - via Wappenbury Village 437835/269415. (Click on location and use Zoom). Hazards: Enjoy the countryside and shut all the gates. This ensures the next rambler will not suffer the wrath of the local farmers. Oh yes, how do you leave a double kissing gate open? Always leave the gate in the position of the smallest shadow. Click Here to Return to 'Lifetime of Walks' Homepage | |||||
