Points of Interest and LINKS: Corfton Corfton Bache Pinstones Westhope Village Hope Dale Wenlock Edge Wolverton Wood Harton Wood Stars Coppice Upper Millichope Topley Wilderhope Manor Stanway Broadstone Village Seed Spreader Clothes MangleGeneral: Short coach comfort stop on Shrewsbury By-pass for 'boots on'. Scenic drive along A49 and B4368 via Craven Arms to Corfton. Steady ascent from coach in lay-by opposite Sun Inn Pub, up lane past Corfton Bache and cottage with a rock face in the back garden. Picturesque valley to Pinstones Cottages with woods on the west bank. Continued along tracks through woods to Westhope lane past fields of horses and an old seed spreader and mangle (see picture and LINKS) in the entrance to the local farm. Walked alongside a couple of ladies exercising their horses just before Westhope Village. From the village the group walked steaply up the field to Wenlock Edge and Wolverton Wood. At the summit we walked along the Edge through Harton Wood to Stars Coppice, where we turned south/east down to 'The Speller' and Upper Millichope Village. We crossed the lane past more horses and up a steep bank to Topley Wood where we stopped for lunch over looking a very misty Hope Dale. After lunch we continued past Topley, along the lane back to Wenlock Edge and the woods leading to the entrance of Wilderhope Manor. Slight detour after Wilderhope Manor lane while Brian found the track down to New Ho. Good photo of our 'back-stops', Lol & Nigel by a field full of mole hills. Continued past lambs playing on a bale of hay just before New Ho and the Coach in the lay-by on the B4368 opposite the closed Seven Stars Public House. We all went home sober but suitably tired thanks to Brian & another excellent day on the hills. www.streepmap.co.uk, start Corfton Village 349530/285005, finish Broadstone Village 354570/290230, via Wenlock Edge 348865/288405. (Use Zoom). Hazards: Take care while walking in mist. This advise applies equally on the mountain tops, as to the unfamiliar wooded ridges in Shropshire. Take a compass reading if at all unsure of the way forward. All the surrounding silhouetted ridges look the same in the mist. Be prepared to meet ladies exercising their horses along the byways on a Sunday morning. Click Here to Return to Midland Hillwalking Index | |||||
