SOUTH WEST COASTAL PATH BURTON to FLEET 4th October 2013 ...............Walk No. 1026 | |||||
South West Coastal Path No: 72 Total: 586.5 miles Time Taken: Cycle: Distance: Enjoyment: Weather: 3.25 hours n/a 7.5 miles 85% Windy at Times Nature: Kestrel, Cobwebs, Blackberries, Pheasants. Temp: Cloud: Rain: Visibility: Ground Conditions: 17oC 40% 10% Good Good Underfoot General: Bus X53 to Abbotsbury, the start of the walk. Continued coastal path along alley from West Street towards St Catherine's Chapel. At Coastal path 'hairpin' I took left hand fork to Grove Lane and onto the Abbotsbury Swannery entrance. No time to visit so I moved on immediately. At the sharp right turn on New Barn Road I climbed the stile straight ahead to climb of Linton Hill. Just after the walls tile, by the blackberry bushes, as I turned right around the wall, I bumped into an elderly couple where the man had just slipped and had fallen over. I encouraged him not to get up too quickly. When he did get up I was happy that he was ok. We chatted a while before I continued up the steep slope of Linton Hill. Good views from the top across to St Catherine's chapel, The fleet water, and Chesil Beach. The swannery easily visible below. Along the edge of the ridge, passing Clayhanger Farm to a steady descent passing Hodder's Coppied. Disturbed lots of pheasants as I passed each dense hedgerow. Soon after Kittle Barrow plantation, approaching Rudden Hive, the light was right for me to notice lots of horizontal lines of web in the strong wind. Very lonely walk apart from a couple of walkers passing me hear Clay Hard Point. Crossed lane at Langton Hive Point where an empty rowing boat awaited anyone wishing to row across the short distance to Chesil Beach. Good views up and down the fleet. I spotted a settlement on Chesil Beach opposite Gore Cove, probably fishermen. As I walked along the shoreline of the fleet I could not help but notice a white substance all along the shoreline and especially around Gore Cove. I wonder. Soon after Moonfleet Manor I passed several grazing horses and foal, then 'the Grove' stream via a long duck walkway to suddenly opening out into a field with an unusual sign. 'Danger-Fast Horses'. I had walked onto a horse gallop. More signs informed me and future walkers to stay away from the sandy track and walk on the grass. Around Butterstreet Cove following 'the Hardy Walk', passing gulls feeding and resting near the shore. I turned left at the East Fleet milestone towards the beautiful setting of Fleet Village. Passed the old church to a line of delightful cottages. At the Fleet Lane I turned right up the lane to the village gates, near the main road, B3157. I passed a huge metal statue. At the main road, a sharp bend, I turned right again hopefully towards the nearest bus stop to catch the bus home.
