|||||
Cotswolds Moreton in the Marsh ........... 9:30 to 10:15am St. David's, 8, 10-0-14 in G 1. Tenor - Call Changes 2. Fourth - Plain Course of Bob Triples 3. Seventh - Called Plain Hunting on Seven Bells 4. Fifth - Rounds and Rung Down. Tower with steeple situated in a quiet cul-de-sac just off the Fosse Way main road (A429). Started to rain as we walked from the car to the church. Average rope drop, very nice loud bells. Sherborne ................. 11:00 to 11:45am St. Mary Magdalene's, 6, 10 cwt in G# 1. Third - Plain Course of Bob Doubles 2. Tenor - Plain Hunt on Five 3. Fourth - Rounds and Lower Ground Floor Ring. No clock hammers. Tower with steeple situated in Sherborne Park alongside Sherborne House near to Fox Inn. One of the bells dates from the 14th Century and another bell was made in 1653 by Edward Neale of Burford. Stone ceiling to ringing chamber. Long rope drop, with very long tails. Difficult to hear the bells. Small box with cushion for tenor, difficult to balance on the cushion. Windrush ....................... 12:00 to 12:45pm St. Peter's, 6, 7.5 cwt in Ab Anticlockwise 1. Tenor - Plain Course of Bob Doubles 2. Tenor - Touch of Grandsire Doubles 3. Treble - Call Changes. Ground Floor Anticlockwise Ring. No clock hammers Tower situated at village green just off the main (A40) road and near to Great Barrington Deer Park. Lunch with Sylvia in Northleach pub on high street very near to village square. Brought back memories of my working days when I was based at Northleach Telephone Exchange, commissioning a 3,000 circuit system from Oxford to Gloucester. Happy days, the sun was always shining. Compton Abdale ................. 3:00 to 3:45pm St. Oswald's, 6, 6-3-4 in Ab 1. Third - Half a Touch of Bob Doubles. The ringer on the Treble (who will be nameless, it happens to us all, not happened to me yet, but I haven't mentioned that) broke the stay so the ringing had to be discontinued. Disappointment all round, but never mind another tower still to be rung before the end of the day. John Nutt agreed to ring the Compton Abdale Tower Captain to reach a settlement. Ringing chamber on Balcony in church. Tower situated in village centre up a steep long path. Not possible to drive close to church. Sylvia stayed in car. Contact for church was late opening the door to the ringing chamber. Withington ...................... 4:00 to 4:45pm St. Michael & All Angel's, 6, 11-0-24 in F 1. Fourth - Touch of Bob Minor ............Lost control of bell briefly due to bits falling on me during ringing. 2. Fifth - Plain hunt on five 3. Treble - Call Changes 3. Tenor - Rang down. Ringing chamber large but entrance via very narrow wooden spiral steps. Tower situated in village close to 'The Mill' public house. We all enjoyed a pleasant journey home through the Cotswols countryside. Thanks to Elaine Jenkinson and John Nutt for organising a great day out while ringing the Cotswolds village bells. Weather : Chilly but mostly dry, little wind. Ropes : Not damp or stiff. Generally in good condition. | |||||
